mom comforting upset babyAll babies cry. That is a fact of life. Some babies cry more than others and some have what doctors call colic. Colic basically means the doctor has no idea why the baby is crying. There are some things you can try to soothe your fussy baby and restore peace to your home. Each baby has his own unique preferences, so you will have to try several methods to see which work best.

Motion is soothing to many babies. The type of motion the baby likes will vary. You can try a baby swing for a short period of time or a vibrating bouncy chair. Walking the baby and swaying in a rhythmic motion is effective for some fussy babies. Others prefer to be rocked in a rocking chair. Through trial and error you will discover which methods work best for your baby.

Parents of colicky babies often anxiously await the doctor’s visit. They are looking for a treatment or cure for the baby’s crying. Often, the day of the visit comes and the parents are left disappointed. In many cases, colic requires no special treatment or medical intervention. Colic often has no medical causes, and therefore, no medical solution. While there is no scientific evidence, parents swear by certain remedies. Before trying any of these, be sure to speak to your baby’s doctor, after all, there is nothing more important than the health of your baby.

After nine long months of pregnancy, you finally bring your little bundle of joy home from the hospital. You are so happy and life is wonderful. The baby is perfect and sleeps most of the day. Then one day things change. The baby is no longer this blissfully sleeping little angel. She is screaming for hours on end. The comfort measures that worked just a few days ago are useless. You try everything to calm the baby and nothing works.

There is no definite cure for colic. This fact won’t stop parents from doing anything they can to help their baby. What works for one baby, may not work for another. The best thing you can do is to try a variety of soothing techniques. When you find a few that work for your baby, stick with them.

If your baby exhibits the signs of colic, the first question you will have will be about the causes of colic. The symptoms are easy to recognize. The baby cries inconsolably for hours. When the baby cries, she appears to be in pain. There is little you can do to help the baby or ease the crying. Doctors use the rule of threes to diagnose colic. This means the baby starts crying by the third week, cries for at least three hours each day and cries more than three days each week.
