Most parents are very excited about baby’s first feedings. After waiting, reading and wondering about what and when to feed solid foods to the baby, you decide to give it a try. However, some babies just aren’t as enthusiastic about the idea of eating from a spoon as their mothers.by Patricia Hughes
If your baby is born in the hospital, chances are she will be swaddled when she is given to you. Hospital nurses are masters of swaddling newborns. The reason behind the nearly universal use of swaddling in hospitals is the belief that babies sleep better and cry less when they are swaddled. Those adorable, jerky newborn motions interrupt sleep, leading to tears.
The Benefits of Swaddling
Babies sleep longer: Babies are used to being snuggled tight in the womb. While being wrapped tightly in a blanket doesn’t sound great to most adults, it is for a new baby. Hospital nurses, friends and your mother will all tell you that babies do sleep better when they are wrapped.

Babies have such tiny, soft nails that many mothers worry about giving them a trim. Since babies have fast growing nails, the time for the first nail trimming will come very soon after you get home from the hospital. Once your baby scratches you, or himself, a few times, you will need to swallow the fear and get out the nail scissors.
The best time to do the job is when the baby is napping. Babies are squirmy and accidents are less likely to occur when the baby is asleep. Accidents can happen, even when baby is asleep. This is the biggest fear new moms have when it comes to trimming baby’s nails. It can, and does happen. You need to forgive yourself and move on.
There really is no “right” age to introduce your baby to a sippy cup. Most parents start to introduce the cup anywhere from six months to a year old. In some cases, the baby may be even younger. We had to introduce a cup at 3 months to a breastfed baby who refused bottles! It turns out; many breastfed babies bypass the bottle and move straight to the sippy cup.
The most important factor in determining the right time is your baby. Some babies are interested in the cup and will take to it faster. Other babies may be resistant at first or completely refuse to take the cup. In this case, the best thing to do is put the cup away for a few weeks, or a few months.
Choosing the right Sippy Cup
When you go shopping for a sippy cup, you will be amazed at the sheer number of choices. There are literally dozens of styles to choose from. The good news is that the type of cup isn’t really important. The choice will boil down to preference—– yours and your baby’s.

First time parents-to-be often experience sticker shock the first time they browse for baby gear. When you start adding up the cost of furniture, car seats, strollers and the multitude of other items you want for your baby, it really adds up to a lot. There are several things you can do to save money while getting ready for baby to arrive.
Watch where you shop: Baby boutiques and specialty stores have adorable items for your new baby. You may get some of their catalogs in the mail during your pregnancy. The first thing you will notice is the high price tags for most of the gear sold in these stores. Overspending is a common mistake, especially with the first baby. You can often find comparable items at a discount store or on sale and save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Having a newborn baby is a beautiful blessing, but it can also be very hard work. Having to get up every two hours to feed your baby can be very draining, especially for parents who have to get up early for work in the morning. Although it is natural for newborns to wake up several times during the night, there are many great ways to get your newborn to sleep through the night only a few weeks after birth.
The first thing to consider is how long you actually consider sleeping through the night. Although an adult would like to have eight or more straight hours of sleep, this is very uncommon in children under a year of age. Aim to have your newborn sleep for about six hours during the night, since they still need to eat even during nighttime and early morning hours.
